WHY CAN WE NOT LINK THESE BRANCHES TO THE WIDER FAMILY ?
After a first division very early in the 12th century the lands which descended from Reginald (in Wiltshire) and Walter (in Herefordshire) were never again shared among siblings, and went always to the eldest son and heir. Some of the younger sons went into the church.... Others went into the army. Some might be lucky enough to find a royal or noble patron or perhaps an heiress. At a later date a younger son might be apprenticed to a wealthy London merchant or tradesman, with the expectation that this would improve his lot. But invariably the younger sons had to be content with a lower standard of living than their elder brother, and younger sons of younger sons (doubly denied) and their posterity tend to disappear from view.
Their descendants are then ‘picked up’ again when the law required parishes to keep records of their baptisms, marriages and burial. Some parish registers survive from the mid-1500s, others from around 1600.
Some family lines, eg. Kingswinford, Cornwall, Westminster, Canterbury - although we can trace their origin within the era of parish registers - nevertheless, it has proved impossible to yet discover the parents of the man who heads the line.
For some of these branches volunteers have taken part in our DNA Study. If you are a direct line male descendant, you might consider this.
Principal branches which cannot at present be linked to family lines descending from Reginald or Walter. |
